Senior Staff Product Manager, Browser Control Platform
Why Mozilla? Mozilla Corporation is the non-profit-backed technology company that has shaped the internet for the better over the last 25 years. We make pioneering brands like Firefox, the privacy-minded web browser. Now, with more than 225 million people around the world using our products each month, we’re shaping the next 25 years of technology and helping to reclaim an internet built for people, not companies. Our work focuses on diverse areas including AI, social media, security and more. And we’re doing this while never losing our focus on our core mission – to make the internet better for people. The Mozilla Corporation is wholly owned by the non-profit 501(c) Mozilla Foundation. This means we aren’t beholden to any shareholders — only to our mission. Along with thousands of volunteer contributors and collaborators all over the world, Mozillians design, build and distribute open-source software that enables people to enjoy the internet on their terms. About this team and role: This role owns the foundation that lets other software drive Firefox: the secure, reliable connection an outside tool or another team uses to act inside the browser, and the building blocks they call to do it. It enables the teams building on it — internal teams, outside AI tools — to create their own products on top. This role owns the shared layer and the strategy for it. It’s a hands-on, technical role in a fast-moving, greenfield space, so it’s as much strategy as execution. The opportunity is broad: internal teams (Smart Window, New Products’ automated tools), outside AI tools and their users, and web developers. The three share much of the underlying technology, but each reaches its market in a different way. The mandate is to figure out what to go after, and in what order. What you’ll do: - Own the shared foundation and the building blocks it gives other software, and make them reliable and secure. - Push the open standard (WebDriver BiDi) forward, and build Firefox-only advantages the standard won’t cover - Design the safety controls: let a person approve actions, see when software is acting for them, and take back control. - Define the strategy for any major third-party AI assistants people already use. - Serve internal teams (Smart Window, New Products) and outside tools through one shared layer. Measured on: Adoption across teams and tools, volume of usage through the platform, and sustained reliability and security. What you'll bring: - A product-minded engineer, or a very technical PM who can drive a technical product - Developer-space experience, with the range to think about consumers and internal platforms - Comfortable setting strategy in ambiguity; own a technical contract other teams depend on - Strong instincts on security and trust. Nice to have: web standards, MCP, browser automation What you’ll get: - Generous performance-based bonus plans to all eligible employees - we share in our success as one team - Rich medical, dental, and vision coverage - Generous retirement contributions with 100% immediate vesting (regardless of whether you contribute) - Quarterly all-company wellness days where everyone takes a pause together - Country specific holidays plus a day off for your birthday - One-time home office stipend - Annual professional development budget - Quarterly well-being stipend - Considerable paid parental leave - Employee referral bonus program - Other benefits (life/AD&D, disability, EAP, etc. - varies by country) About Mozilla Mozilla exists to build the Internet as a public resource accessible to all because we believe that open and free is better than closed and controlled. When you work at Mozilla, you give yourself a chance to make a difference in the lives of Web users everywhere. And you give us a chance to make a difference in your life every single day. Why Thunderbird? Thunderbird is one of the world’s most trusted open-source email applications, empowering more than 20 million people globally. At MZLA, the team behind Thunderbird, we build privacy-respecting communication and productivity tools that help people manage their digital lives while staying in control of their data. We are open source by design. Our products are developed transparently and in collaboration with a global community of contributors, and that same spirit shapes how we work: collaboratively, inclusively, and with a shared commitment to putting users first. We are a small but growing company of 60+ people distributed across seven countries. As Thunderbird evolves beyond a single desktop application, we are expanding across desktop, mobile, paid services, and new product experiences that help people and organizations work more effectively without giving up control to big tech ecosystems. Our revenue model combines user donations, which help keep Thunderbird’s apps freely available, with paid services that cover the costs of hosted offerings while supporting long-term sustainability and continued innovation. A note about MZLA and Mozilla: MZLA Technologies Corporation is the nonprofit-owned company behind Thunderbird and part of the Mozilla family. MZLA is separate from Mozilla Corporation and has its own compensation programs, benefits, and employment policies. To learn more, visit www.thunderbird.net and www.thunderbolt.io. The opportunity Thunderbolt is an open-source, cross-platform AI product initiative from the team behind Thunderbird. It is being built around a clear principle: people and organizations should be able to use AI while staying in control of their data, infrastructure, model choices, and long-term options. Thunderbolt is designed to support flexible deployment models, integrations with AI tools and workflows, and use cases across desktop, web, and mobile. We’re looking for a Staff Product Engineer to help build Thunderbolt as it moves from early product development into enterprise use cases. This role sits at the intersection of full-stack product engineering, AI-enabled product development, enterprise workflows, technical execution, product judgment, and post-launch iteration. You’ll work across the stack to turn product direction, user needs, partner feedback, and enterprise requirements into complete product features for AI-powered chat, search, research, workflow automation, administration, integrations, and enterprise workflows. This is not a role focused only on implementing tickets. You’ll own product work from concept through launch, adoption, and iteration, helping the team understand whether features are usable, reliable, being used, and creating value. You should be comfortable operating independently in ambiguity, working across front-end, back-end, APIs, integrations, and infrastructure-adjacent areas, and making thoughtful tradeoffs between speed, usability, maintainability, reliability, and enterprise needs. Strong candidates will be able to turn ambiguous product ideas and technical direction into shipped product experiences, reusable product and engineering patterns, and practical improvements that help Thunderbolt scale as both an open-source product and an enterprise-ready platform. What you’ll do - Own the implementation of Thunderbolt product features from concept through launch, adoption, and iteration. - Translate product vision, user needs, partner feedback, and enterprise requirements into practical technical plans and shipped product experiences. - Work across the stack to build, integrate, test, and ship complete product features. - Build features for AI-powered chat, search, research, workflow automation, administration, integrations, and enterprise workflows. - Partner closely with product, design, engineering, enterprise-facing teams, and open-source contributors to clarify requirements and deliver high-quality outcomes. - Collaborate with senior technical leadership to turn product-shaping technical direction into executable product work. - Use AI-assisted development tools thoughtfully to accelerate implementation while maintaining strong judgment around quality, security, maintainability, and reliability. - Make thoughtful technical and product tradeoffs in ambiguous situations, balancing speed, usability, maintainability, reliability, and enterprise needs. - Follow through after launch by reviewing usage, qualitative feedback, support signals, quality issues, and adoption patterns. - Instrument features or collaborate on measurement approaches that help the team understand adoption, reliability, and product value. - Identify product gaps, technical risks, edge cases, and opportunities to improve the user experience. - Write clear, maintainable, well-tested code across front-end, back-end, APIs, integrations, and infrastructure-adjacent areas. - Help establish reusable product and engineering patterns that allow future features to be built more efficiently. - Contribute to a product engineering culture grounded in ownership, quality, experimentation, user value, and practical execution. What you bring - 10+ years of professional software engineering experience, including significant experience building and shipping production applications with Staff-level scope, leadership, and impact. - Strong full-stack engineering skills, with the ability to work across user interfaces, APIs, services, integrations, data flows, and infrastructure-adjacent areas. - Demonstrated experience owning complex product features from technical planning through implementation, launch, evaluation, and iteration. - Experience building AI-enabled products or features, with practical familiarity in LLMs, RAG, agents, model/provider abstraction, data connectors, retrieval systems, or AI application architecture. - Practical experience evaluating and using multiple AI tools, models, frameworks, or development harnesses, with the ability to explain tradeoffs, limitations, and preferred tooling choices. - Experience working with open-source enterprise products, developer tools, infrastructure products, platform products, or technically complex enterprise software. - Strong product judgment, including the ability to translate product direction, user feedback, partner input, customer needs, and product signals into practical technical plans and follow-up iterations. - Comfort operating independently in a fast-changing product environment where product direction, technical architecture, and enterprise requirements are still being defined. - Strong understanding of software quality, testing, maintainability, security, performance, reliability, and implementation tradeoffs. - Strong collaboration and communication skills across engineering, product, design, open-source, and customer- or partner-facing stakeholders. - Awareness of enterprise software needs, including privacy, security, administration, access control, compliance, deployment flexibility, supportability, and responsible AI considerations. Bonus points for - Experience with self-hosted, hybrid, customer-controlled, or regulated deployment environments. - Familiarity with regulatory or compliance considerations affecting AI and enterprise software, such as the EU AI Act, Cyber Resilience Act, GDPR, HIPAA, SOC 2, or similar frameworks. - Experience working with enterprise customers, public sector organizations, systems integrators, technical partners, or customer-facing engineering teams. - Experience contributing to reusable product patterns, component libraries, technical frameworks, or shared engineering practices. - Experience with instrumentation, observability, experimentation, or other approaches to understanding product adoption, reliability, and value. What success looks like In this role, success means helping Thunderbolt turn ambiguous product ideas, technical direction, user needs, and enterprise requirements into complete product capabilities that are usable, reliable, maintainable, and valuable. You will help the team move quickly while also building the patterns, feedback loops, and product quality needed for Thunderbolt to scale as both an open-source product and an enterprise-ready platform. Over time, successful work in this role will lead to: - Shipped features that solve real user, partner, and enterprise needs. - Stronger full-stack product capabilities across AI-powered chat, search, research, workflow automation, administration, integrations, and enterprise workflows. - Clearer technical plans that translate product direction and enterprise requirements into executable work. - Better post-launch understanding of whether features are being used, working as intended, and creating value. - More reusable product and engineering patterns that help future features move faster. - Fewer product gaps, edge cases, and technical risks discovered late in development. - Stronger alignment between product, design, engineering, enterprise-facing teams, and open-source contributors. - Greater confidence that Thunderbolt features are secure, maintainable, supportable, and ready for enterprise use. Work environment You’ll work with our passionate staff and open-source community members from all over the globe to support the mission and objectives of MZLA Technologies Corporation. What you'll bring: - Proven Shipping Experience: Hands-on experience launching or managing apps on the iOS App Store and/or Google Play Store, with clear impact on user experience and metrics. - Execution Focus: A strong track record of delivering features and improvements under deadlines through effective collaboration with engineering, design and cross-functional partners. - Mobile & Browser Fluency: Deep understanding of iOS (and ideally Android) ecosystems, app store policies and web browser technologies, with genuine passion for what makes a great browsing experience. - Data-Driven Iteration: Comfort using analytics, funnels, A/B testing and user feedback to improve activation, retention and overall product quality. - User Obsession: Natural habit of studying apps, following trends on platforms like X/Twitter and Reddit, and testing experiences yourself to uncover opportunities. - Global & Growth Mindset: Interest or experience growing products in international markets with sensitivity to local user needs. - Bonus: - Experience with mobile browsers or privacy-focused products. - History of meaningfully scaling an app’s user base. - Currently maintaining your own side project or app on the App Store or Google Play. What you’ll get: - Generous performance-based bonus plans to all eligible employees - we share in our success as one team - Rich medical, dental, and vision coverage - Generous retirement contributions with 100% immediate vesting (regardless of whether you contribute) - Quarterly all-company wellness days where everyone takes a pause together - Country specific holidays plus a day off for your birthday - One-time home office stipend - Annual professional development budget - Quarterly well-being stipend - Considerable paid parental leave - Employee referral bonus program - Other benefits (life/AD&D, disability, EAP, etc. - varies by country) About Mozilla Mozilla exists to build the Internet as a public resource accessible to all because we believe that open and free is better than closed and controlled.
Why Mozilla? Mozilla Corporation is the non-profit-backed technology company that has shaped the internet for the better over the last 25 years. We make pioneering brands like Firefox, the privacy-minded web browser, and Pocket, a service for keeping up with the best content online. This means we aren’t beholden to any shareholders - only to our mission. Along with thousands of volunteer contributors and collaborators all over the world, Mozillians design, build and distribute open-source software that enables people to enjoy the internet on their terms. About this team and role: We’re looking for a hands-on Mobile Product Manager with a primary focus on Firefox for iOS, while also contributing across mobile (including Android). This role is about building a better browser, turning downloads into loyal users, and creating experiences that truly stand out. If you’ve shipped mobile apps, obsess over details that improve everyday use, and love turning user insights into real improvements, this is a great opportunity to drive impact at Firefox. What you’ll do: - Build a fundamentally better browser experience: fix bugs, refine UI and navigation, improve downloads, menus, performance, and all the small details that make Firefox noticeably better for users who care about privacy, quality and reliability. - Drive strong activation and retention: focus on the new-user journey, quickly hooking people after they install the app, understanding where they drop off, and relentlessly optimizing the funnel through data, testing and iteration. - Deliver differentiating features and experiences that make Firefox stickier for key user groups, the kinds of things others can’t or won’t build. - Work closely with engineers, designers, data science and TPMs to ship high-impact improvements while balancing user needs, technical constraints, privacy and performance goals. - Stay deeply connected to real users: track App Store trends and discussions, test apps hands-on, analyze reviews and analytics, and turn those insights into concrete enhancements for Firefox on iOS and Android. - Monitor app health in App Store Connect and Google Play Console (crashes, ANRs, ratings) and support acquisition/retention efforts through ASO, store listings and growth experiments. - Adapt and optimize Firefox for global markets (Europe, Japan, Asia etc.), keeping cultural differences and local realities like data constraints in mind. When you work at Mozilla, you give yourself a chance to make a difference in the lives of Web users everywhere. And you give us a chance to make a difference in your life every single day.
